Differences

A while back I wrote an entry about the differences between living in New England and living in Louisiana. It was on Journalspace so you won't find it in this journal.

I encountered another difference today.

I was in a rural town trying to get an older man to answer some questions for me about a particular piece of property. He answered my questions and then had some for me. The first question he asked me was to what church I belong.

Where I come from nobody cares what church to which you belong or even if you go to church at all.

Fortunately I had an answer for him. I am not sure how helpful he would have been otherwise.

  1. My suggestion....when asked that question, tell people you're a Presbyterian. Any Pentacostals or Southern Baptists you run into will be satisfied that you at least picked a church, yet confused enough by the word "Presbyterian" that they won't ask any more religion questions. Methodists will approve of your choice in protestantism, and other Presbyterians will be glad that they've finally run into someone else in Louisiana that can read.

  2. I said the "First United Methodist Church" because it is one that is on the radio and I know the name of the pastor. I correctly assumed that he is a Baptist.

  3. I always wish someone would ask me that so I could answer ‘The Church of Satan’ – though I suppose that might not be a good idea under the circumstances.

  4. Be careful, methodist churches could be AME churches, and since you clearly have no African ancestry, that could get you in trouble. Because there are no black Presbyterians, you are safer that way.

Lutheran would be safe too, since there are no Lutherans in Louisiana (Germans and Swedes have more sense than to move there).
